One more thing after lunch. One more thing after lunch. This is the one thing that really changed our homeschool. When the children were all little we could usually get most of our learning completed before lunch. As they grew and the needs of the age range grew as well, I struggled to fit it all. My friend, Kerri, chimed in with, “we do one more thing after lunch.” That concept, that one schedule change, revolutionized our homeschool.

In the morning we have our special time with the little ones and room time, we complete our three Rs, piano practice and a few other things. Then during – and right after – lunch we spend time on one or more subjects. History, science, vocabulary, enrichment. Following is a list we choose from each day. We have typical days for certain ones so I am prepared with supplies we might need.

Each day/One or more of the following:

• History: Tapestry of Grace history, literature, church history, arts & activities
• Science: Answers in Genesis God’s Design for Science series
• Vocabulary: English from the Roots Up (I read the flashcards and we review those we’ve already covered)
• Harmony Fine Arts Plans for studying composers and artists
• Visual Latin
• Sketch Tuesday
• Handbook of Nature Study Outdoor Hour Challenge nature study
• Apologia Biology lesson for the older ones or Apologia Biology flashcards app
• Hands on activity
• art lesson

• I always try to take advantage of special class opportunities that come up through 4-H, the library, universities, and more, too!

any times, I’ll plan field trips to go along with a current unit study.  Other times, we just go with the flow of opportunities that arise.  I work hard to integrate field trips into our schooling regularly.  Like one or two per month, sometimes more.  They really have proven to be that powerful in real learning!  Not to mention, they keep us from getting burned out on bookwork – especially in the “blue” months of homeschooling.
